Teenager dies in a two-vehicle crash in Laurel: Police

A teenage passenger died and the driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision Friday in Laurel, Delaware State Police report.

Police said in a release the crash happened Nov. 26 at around 2:35 p.m. on Sycamore Road at the intersection to Beaver Dam Branch Road.

According to police, a 2017 Subaru WRX driven by a Frankford teenager, age 17, was traveling westbound on Sycamore Road at a high rate of speed. At this time, a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old man of Salisbury was traveling westbound on Sycamore Road in front of the Subaru.

The Ford slowed down at the intersection to make a left turn onto Beaver Dam Branch Road. As the Ford began the left turn, the Subaru was unable to stop and in an attempt to avoid striking the Ford, the Subaru began to pass it on the left, but its front right struck the Ford., pushing the pickup in a northwest direction, where it came to rest in the westbound lane of Sycamore Road.

The impact caused the Subaru to exit the roadway while rotating in a counterclockwise direction, and then went airborne and hit a utility pole on its passenger side, ejecting the 17-year-old passenger, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The 17-year-old driver of the Subaru was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The 18-year-old driver of the Ford was not injured.

Sycamore Road at Beaver Dam Branch Road remained closed while the utility pole was replaced.
