Teenager killed Thursday night in shooting on southwest side of South Bend

SOUTH BEND — A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday evening in an apartment complex on the southwest side of South Bend.

South Bend police officers were first dispatched just before 7 p.m. to the Prairie Apartments, off of Prairie Avenue, when a 911 caller said a boy had been shot.

Police say Donnie Gray, 15, was declared dead at the scene due to the injuries he had sustained from gunshot wounds.

A juvenile suspect was immediately taken into custody, and the investigation was handed over to the department’s Violent Crimes Unit.

Through a collaboration with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office, the juvenile suspect was charged for criminal acts that led up to the shooting.

The suspect is being held at the Juvenile Justice Center.

Officials say that "all parties involved have been identified and are currently speaking with detectives."

As of Friday morning, the police department's daily log listed the incident as "negligent manslaughter."
