Teens involved in police shooting had juvenile records
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — WREG has taken a closer look at the juvenile criminal records of the two teens investigators say were involved in the death of a Memphis police officer.
On April 12, 18-year-old Jaylen Lobley and a 17-year-old were allegedly involved in a shootout that caused the death of officer Joseph McKinney and injured two other officers.

Lobley was killed during the shootout as well.
WREG uncovered records that showed Lobley had a charge of aggravated robbery from June of 2023 that was dismissed when he was a juvenile.

Records also indicated that the 17-year-old, who was critically injured in the shooting, had a juvenile record as well.
He’d gotten three charges of aggravated robbery in November of 2022. Four other redacted crimes were also listed in the “agreed order of disposition.”
Records show he entered a “no contest plea” in March of 2023, and he was to be placed in the corrective custody of the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services for an “indeterminate sentence.”
As of Monday, he remains hospitalized.
Due to the fact this suspect is underage and has not yet been charged as an adult, WREG is not naming him at this time.
This new information comes as the community spent the weekend visiting the Raines Police Precinct where Officer McKinney worked.
One of the mourners in attendance was Reverend James Kirkwood. He is a retired Memphis Police Colonel who was on the force for more than 30 years.

When speaking with WREG, he said it will take a collaborative effort to ensure tragedies like this don’t continue to happen.
“To reduce this crime, how do we move our young men out of the path of destruction,” Kirkwood said. “We have to do better. You know all of us together, have to do better.”
