‘Tell Me Lies’ Star Grace Van Patten Is Acting’s Next It Girl

Grace Van Patten: If the name's familiar, it's prob because of her absolutely ~riveting~ turn as Lucy in the Hulu drama Tell Me Lies. But she's actually been acting for a while now, including roles on Tramps, The Meyerowitz Stories, Boardwalk Empire, Nine Perfect Strangers and...a small part on The Sopranos as a kid??

Basically, Grace comes from a long line of Hollywood pros: Her dad, Timothy Van Patten, directed The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, and her uncle was acting legend Dick Van Patten (Eight Is Enough). But Grace has already made a name for herself—acting alongside greats like Adam Sandler and Glenn Close, NBD.

She's been an actor since she was a kid.

Grace, who grew up in New York, started her acting career at the age of 8 while her dad was directing The Sopranos. In an interview with Deadline, she explained how she ended up playing the daughter of a gangster in one episode.

Apparently, when she told her dad, he told her she'd need to audition and that he wouldn't be involved in getting her the part—which, wow, intense, but Grace totally landed it anyways.

Tell Me Lies has been her big break.

Grace has been working ever since, on TV and film as well as some stage work—but Tell Me Lies helped her become more widely known. The series is based on the hit novel of the same name: Lucy Albright and Stephen DeMarco (played by Jackson) have a college romance that—spoiler—is rlly, rlly toxic. We also get flash-forwards to 2015, where they reunite as guests at a wedding (and aren't together). The romantic entanglements are *intense* and so's the drama, TBH, so if you're into throwback college drama with a murder mystery thrown in there, you should def give season one a watch.

Grace apparently loves the character, who struggles with the unhealthiness of her relationship with Stephen. She told People, "I saw a part of myself in Lucy, and I saw a part of almost every woman I know in my life in Lucy." There's no news yet about season two, but fans are absolutely obsessed with the story—partly because Grace and Jackson have some major IRL chemistry and there's been some intense dating rumors when they started appearing at red carpets ~together~.

First of all, Jackson raves about Grace in interviews. "All I’m saying is that I’m obsessed with her because she’s f*cking amazing," he said in a “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast episode, adding that he has "such a crush." Grace has played it coy and not chatted about the sitch as much, but she did say that he was IRL her "biggest crush ever."

(Spoiler alert) Talking to Deadline, Grace said she was hoping for a vengeance arc for her character in season 2, where Lucy ends up as Stephen's boss or some other position of power. "She must have to go back to him. That seems like a relationship that’s just a constant push and pull." In the season one finale (via a 2015 flash-forward), it was revealed that Stephen's now with Lucy's best friend Lydia and Lucy's with the more stable Max—but clearly not over her ex. "To watch that journey of her get there and then have Stephen just pop into her life again, I would love to see the process of that," Grace added. Um. Same??
