Telluride films, Fall Equinox Festival, Granite State Fair: 15 things to do this weekend
September is in full swing with another beautiful late summer weekend on tap for the Seacoast. Treasure these warm days by getting out to some of these great events this weekend.
Telluride by the Sea is here
The Music Hall’s Telluride by the Sea Film Festival featuring films from the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado is one of those events that makes Portsmouth an extremely special place for those who appreciate the arts. How lucky are we to be able to see these films in a beautiful historic theater this weekend before the rest of the world can.
The schedule for the weekend is: Friday, Sept. 16: 6 p.m., doors open for Patron Passholders; 7 p.m., TÁR; Patron Passholder Party at The Music Hall Lounge following the film; Saturday, Sept. 17: Noon, Bardo; 4 p.m., Women Talking; 7:30 p.m., The Wonder; Passholder Festival Party on Chestnut Street following the film; and Sunday, Sept. 18: 10 to 11:30 a.m., Patron Passholder Brunch at The Music Hall Lounge; noon, Wildcat; 3 p.m.. TEAM Fall Equinox Festival this weekend
TEAM's Fall Equinox Fest will take place in Swasey Parkway in downtown Exeter on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There'll be live music, artist vendors, dance performances, food trucks, kids' activities, lawn games and more.
Musical groups will perform on the Pavilion Stage: 11 a.m., Malfunctions; 12:30 p.m., Bitter Pill; 2 p.m., Senie Hunt Project; 3 p.m. Groove Lounge featuring Marcus Rabb, PEA jazz director; and 4 p.m., The Meter Maids.
In the Singer/Songwriter Tent, performing will be 11 a.m., Dyer Holiday; noon, Darien Castro; 1 p.m., Artty Francoeur; 2 p.m., Soul Color; 3 p.m., Laura Lee; 4 p.m., Elijah Clark. There'll be food available for purchase from Cafe El Camino, Local Lunchbox, Friends 4 Oba and Chubba Wubba Ice Cream

Granite State Fair opens in Rochester
The 2022 Granite State Fair opens Thursday, Sept. 15 at the fairgrounds at 72 Lafayette St. in Rochester, and will be open Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 15 to 18, and Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 22 to 25. On Thursdays and Fridays, the fair and midway will open at 4 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays, the fair opens 10 a.m. and the midway at noon.
Tickets to the fair can be purchased at granitestatefair.com or at the fairgrounds. General admission to the fairgrounds will be $10 online until Sept. 14 at 11:59 p.m., and will be $12 on site. Parking is $5 online and $7 on site.
There are additional charges for all grandstand events, such as the motocross, enduro and derby shows. See pricing and details at granitestatefair.com/grandstand-events.
Megapass tickets are $39 pre-sale and $49 after. The ticket covers entrance to the fair and a wristband for rides all day. Wristbands alone can be purchased for $25.

Long Story Short at 3S Artspace
Long Story Short: NSFW will take place Thursday, Sept.15 at 7 p.m. at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth. The theme is NSFW (Not Safe For Work). In this era of the Great Resignation, people are taking a step back and looking at work in new ways. This show is an opportunity to hear and share stories about nightmare customers, toxic bosses, and jobs we should have given up on long ago; and also meaningful work.
Doors open at 6 p.m. for this all ages, seated show. Admission is pay-what-you-choose starting at $10. Featured storytellers are Matt Kanner, Mark Michael Adams, Richard DiPippo, Brooke Williams, Gail Knowles, John Breneman and Daniel Thomas Moran. Brett Young at the Casino Ballroom
One of country music's elite hit makers Brett Young will perform at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom on Thursday, Sept. 15 with opener Matt Ferranti. Show starts at 8 p.m., doors open at 7 for this 18-plus general admission show. Tickets are $55 and available at casinoballroom.com.
Say Zuzu at the Stone Church
In the early '90s, Newmarket-based Say ZuZu found its sound in a growing alt-country movement which spawned artists like The Old 97s and Wilco and inspired others. A pandemic-inspired reconnection with old friend and longtime label owner George Fontaine resulted in ZuZu signing a multi-layered, multi-album recording contract with Strolling Bones to release five of their past records, and two new ones. They'll play what is now a soldout concert with Palomino Motel opening on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. Keep an eye at portsmouthnhtickets.com in case anything changes.
Tim Sample to perform at 30th Capriccio
The 30th annual Capriccio Festival in Ogunquit continues with a performance by Tim Sample on Friday, Sept.16. The well-known New England and Down East humorist Tim Sample returns to Ogunquit Performing Arts – a favorite among local residents and visitors alike. The performance will be at 7:30 pm in the Dunaway Center, 23 School St., Ogunquit.
Sample will celebrate the 30th Capriccio by bringing with him 30 CDs, which will be given free to the first 30 advance ticket purchasers, who will be selected simply according to the date purchased, regardless of whether online or in person. They will be given their CDs at the performance where they can be autographed

'Great American Trailer Park' opens
Rochester Opera House presents The Great American Trailer Park Musical, directed by Patrick Dorow, Sept. 16 to Oct. 2. This raunchy, all-American musical will be filmed in front of a live audience at the Opera House, in historic Rochester, N.H. on Opening Night. It will then run Thursdays through Sundays until Oct. 2. The live filmed performance will stream nationwide through Broadway On Demand, powered by Stellar, starting Thursday, Sept. 22.

Talking Heads tribute at Cisco
The Press Room is closing out its summer concert series at Cisco Brewers on Friday night, Sept. 16 with Start Making Sense, a Talking Heads tribute band. The 21-plus show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance; $30 on day of show and available at pressroomnh.com.
Tea and Stitchery at the Wentworth House
Hand sewing enthusiasts and fans of colonial fashions are invited to “Tea and Stitchery” on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Rollinsford’s historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House. Between 1 and 4 p.m., the Wentworth ladies will gather in the parlor to drink tea, sew, and discuss the latest fashions of the 1700s. Costumed in period attire, the ladies will demonstrate the tools and techniques involved in hand sewing 18th century clothing. Both completed garments and some in process will be on display. Comedian Lenny Clarke in Kittery
Scamps Comedy presents comedian Lenny Clarke performing at the Star Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 17. The show starts at 8 p.m. at the theater inside the Kittery Community Center on Rogers Road in Kittery. Tickets are $30 each; $280 for a table for eight people. Suite Sundays at The Dance Hall
Suite Sundays at The Dance Hall will present "The Sextets of Dvořák and Schoenberg" on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. The Suite Sundays series continues with the Aliento Chamber Players string sextet performing two iconic string sextets. Oyster Week begins Sunday
Oyster Week returns to the Seacoast this Sunday, Sept. 18 with a week of events highlighting the state’s fastest-growing seafood industry. Half of the state’s 14 oyster farms will take part in events at local breweries and restaurants from Newmarket to Newington showcasing the state’s oyster harvest which has grown by nearly 800 percent in value since 2013. The celebration starts with Oysterfest at the Stone Church in Newmarket and spreads to Stoneface Brewing, Throwback Brewery and Bernie's Beach Bar throughout the week.
Meet Strafford County Democratic candidates
The Strafford County Democrats are holding an event Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 551 Foundry Road in Rollinsford. The theme “Hike To The Top,” which emphasizes the group's goal of ensuring every voter votes all the way down the ballot. Attendees can meet county, state and senate candidates running in Strafford County including gubernatorial candidate Tom Sherman, and Mayor and Executive Council candidate Mayor Dana Hilliard, Congressman Chris Pappas as well as House Democratic leaders Matt Wilhelm and Manny Espitia. Remembering Rick Dirck
The family of WSCA DJ Rick Dirck is inviting his family, friends and the public to a celebration of his life on Sunday Sept. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the WSCA Community Radio station at 909 Islington St. in Portsmouth. Dirck died on Aug. 30 after a two-year battle with cancer.
