Tempe police arrested a man suspected of driving under the influence after police say the vehicle he was driving collided with a Department of Public Safety patrol vehicle on Sunday.

The man was identified as Kevin Lucas Rivers, 31.

According to court documents, Rivers was driving westbound on East Broadway Road at around 2:46 p.m. when he ran a red light and collided with a DPS patrol vehicle headed south on College Avenue.

The DPS trooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, according to a Tempe police statement.

When police arrived, Rivers was passed out at the wheel and was unresponsive to any verbal stimulus, according to court documents.

Officers located an empty bottle of vodka in the passenger seat as well as in the back passenger seat of Rivers' vehicle. A backpack was also found in the back seat of the vehicle, containing a full bottle of vodka and another empty bottle, according to court documents.

Rivers was transported to a local hospital where he was medically cleared for jail. A search warrant was obtained for Rivers' blood where it was determined by his doctor that the preliminary results of Rivers' bloodwork showed an alcohol level of 0.339 resulting in an extreme DUI charge, according to court documents.

A further records check also revealed that Rivers had outstanding felony warrants for failure to appear for charges, which were confirmed, according to court documents.

Rivers was booked into Maricopa County Jail and faces multiple, charges including a DUI slightest degree, DUI extreme, an outstanding felony warrant with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and an outstanding warrant with Coconino County.
