Keith Julius of Temperance released his fifth book earlier this month.

Julius was one of the local writers featured at November’s Writers on the River event at the Ellis Library & Reference Center. Julius’ first book was a suspense thriller. The other four are part of his CASA series. Julius is an eight-year volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocate in Lucas County, an organization that advocates for abused and neglected children. The CASA books are all set in Toledo. While fictional, they are based on his own experiences. All of his books are self-published.

“Like the others in the series, ‘A Decade Aborning’ deals with issues faced by families in crisis,” Julius said.

In the new, 328-page book, a teen attempts suicide.

“Beverly Johnson, a Court Appointed Special Advocate, is assigned to the case. Meeting with the teenager brings up unresolved issues from both of their pasts, with the clues to Pamela's mental health and Beverly’s recurring doubts buried beneath 10 years of family complications and unresolved issues,” the author said.

“I feel my books are important for several reasons,” he added. “They bring to light issues and real concerns that many families in our communities are facing. These are often difficult subjects to read about, but consider how much harder they are for the people who experience these situations. There are people out there who are hurting and in need, and as a society, we need to be aware of this. My books also shine a light on the CASA program. Court Appointed Special Advocates have been working with children for 45 years, ever since the program was begun in 1977 in Seattle, Washington. I would love to see people inspired enough by my writing to become CASA volunteers and help children in need.”

Julius has just begun a sixth book that he hopes to finish by the end of summer.
