Temperatures to soar across India this week

After Amphan brought torrential rain and damaging winds to northeastern India late last week, a calmer forecast will be in place across the country this week.

An area of high pressure will promote dry conditions across much of India through the end of May.

Hazy sunshine and dry weather will help temperatures soar to around 38 C (100 F) each afternoon.

New Delhi, Lucknow and Jaipur will be just a few cities that can expect high temperatures to climb the highest, even over 43 C (110 F) for a few days through the middle of the week.

Temperatures in New Delhi hit 46 C (115 F) on Monday afternoon while Jaipur and Lucknow each had a high of 44 C (111 F).

These cities can typically expect temperatures around 41 C (105 F) during this time of year.

Heat across the country will cause the air quality to deteriorate, but it will not be to the level residents are used to. Extensive lockdown regulations in recent weeks, due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, has helped to decrease air pollution in the region.

Meanwhile, winds out of the west will help to increase moisture across southern India, which will produce daily showers and thunderstorms.

Increasing cloud cover and any brief downpour will help to limit how high afternoon temperatures are able to climb across Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu.

Showers and thunderstorms will also keep western Sri Lanka in the 27-32 C (80s F).

By the middle of the week, a weak storm system is forecast to pass over southern India, which will increase shower thunderstorm activity across the area.

While any storms that develop throughout the week can threaten brief downpours, gusty winds and frequent lightning strikes, areas of localized flooding with heavier downpours during midweek.

Eastern India will also continue to be hit with rounds of heavy rain. This area, as well as parts of Bangladesh, were impacted by Cyclone Amphan when it hit the region less than a week ago.

While the areas hit hardest near the coast will miss out on the heaviest rain, even inland locations are running wet following the cyclone. Localized flooding could be possible with this new batch of rain this week.
