Temporary Sitterly Road bridge installed over Northway in Clifton Park

CLIFTON PARK — Workers installed a temporary bridge on Sitterly Road above a portion of the Northway overnight Saturday to Sunday, but the section of Sitterly Road isn't ready for public use, the New York Department of Transportation said Sunday.
The work closed southbound lanes of Interstate 87 between Exit 9 and Exit 8A late Saturday, but they have since been reopened, the DOT said.
Sitterly Road over the Northway will remain closed to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists until additional work, including approaches, ramps, pavement and rails connecting to the new bridge, are complete, the DOT said.
A section of the bridge above the highway was damaged by a truck crash April 14. The DOT then removed the damaged section of bridge 10 days later.
A boom lift being towed on a trailer behind a truck smashed into the overpass, damaging it beyond repair and closing all three southbound lanes of the Northway, and congesting the morning commute.
The bridge was immediately closed so that engineers could evaluate the structural damage it had sustained.
Its closure caused traffic congestion in Clifton Park and Halfmoon, prompting adjustment of normal driving patterns and school bus routes.
State police said George Gizzi, 56, of Colonie, was ticketed for driving an Admar Construction Equipment & Supplies Co. truck in the right southbound lane when the boom lift he was towing hit the overpass. The rig exceeded the 14-foot, 4-inch height limit for the overpass. The boom was knocked off the trailer and across all three driving lanes.
