Temps not cold enough to keep Hawley Ice Rink open so far this winter

"CLOSED" signs have temporarily been in place at the Hawley ice skating rink in Bingham Park awaiting return of cold enough weather to let the ice form sufficiently. Open water could be seen at one end of the rink, as seen here on January 24. This is the firts time in several years that Hawley has offered ice skating. The 00rink was purchased by Hawley Parks & Recreation Commission.

Relatively mild weather has interfered and kept the ice rink in Hawley's Bingham closed most of the time this winter.

Skaters were seen on the rink during Christmas week, following the most frigid weather of the season to date. Since then, Public Works Director Scott Mead put up large signs to tell skaters the rink is closed.

At the council meeting January 11, Councilor Elaine Herzog reminded that a permanent sign is needed stating that ice hockey is not permitted.

It should also say "skate at your own risk" and "use common sense," she suggested.

The 100- by 50-foot rink, weather permitting, is open daily free of charge. The rink is set up directly across from borough hall.

When it finally opens back up, Ken Morrison, treasurer at Lake Region EMS, said the ambulance company would like to set up a tent nearby and perhaps offer hot chocolate, while being available in case anyone needs their services.

Hawley Parks & Recreation Commission bought the rink and liner in November from Pocono Township, Monroe County, where it had been used in Tannersville. The cost was under $3,400, secured through donations and a $500 allocation from Parks & Recreation.
