Ten area basketball coaches named 2023 SDBCA Coaches of the Year

Ten area boys and girls basketball coaches, including four from Hamlin, have been named as 2023 Coaches of the Year by the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association.

Region 1 honorees include Jerome Nesheim and Mark Prouty of Clark-Willow Lake, head boys and assistant boys coaches of the year; Jeff Kosters of Leola/Frederick Area, head girls coach; and Steven Marks of Tiospa Zina, assistant girls coach.

Region 2 recipients include Todd Neuendorf of Hamlin, head boys coach; Tim Koisti of Hamlin, head girls coach; Buster Vincent of Sioux Valley, assistant boys coach; and Jaime Neuendorf of Hamlin, assistant girls coach.

Hank Taken Alive of Mobridge-Pollock and Lexi Roe of Hamlin are the Regions 1-4 lower level boys and girls coaches of the year.

Other Coaches of the Year

Region 3: Brianna Kusler of Pierre, head boys; Josh McGillvrey of Wolsey-Wessington, head girls; Brevin Kaiser of Pierre, assistant boys; and Terry Becker of Pierre, assistant girls.

Region 4: Kyle Courtney and Joseph Kieffer of Rapid City Christian, head boys and head girls; Steve Hilton of Sturgis, assistant boys; and Ted Standing Soldier of Rapid City Christian, assistant girls.

Region 5: Tim Reck of Sioux Falls Jefferson, head boys; Jamie Parish of Sioux Falls Washington, head girls; Tanner Hilbrands of Sioux Falls Jefferson, assistant boys; and Alicia Hess of Sioux Falls Washington, assistant girls.

Region 6: Chris Haynes of Yankton, head boys; Molly Mason of Viborg-Hurley, head girls; Zach Ronning of Elk Point-Jefferson, assistant boys; and Dana Bigge of Harrisburg and Paul McVey of Lennox, assistant girls.

Region 7: Ryker Kreutzfeldt of Mitchell, head boys; Michael Koupal of Wagner, head girls; Jason Helling of Mount Vernon-Plankinton, assistant boys; and Joe Shepardson of Parkston, assistant girls.

Region 8: Aaron Noteboom of Hot Springs, head boys; John Hess of Wall, head girls; Trent Olson of Winner, assistant boys; and Madison McLaughlin of Wall, assistant girls.

Regions 5-8: Gary Nebelsick of Elk Point-Jefferson, lower level boys coach; and Bill Hansen of Viborg-Hurley, lower level girls coach.

John Wooden Legacy Award Winners

Four South Dakota coaches have been chosen to receive 2022 and 2023 John Wooden Legacy Awards from the National High School Basketball Coaches Association.

South Dakota's 2023 honorees are Jim Noyes of Huron (boys basketball) and Ron Determan of Colome (girls basketball). The 2023 honorees included the late Marv McCune of De Smet (boys basketball) and Dawn Seiler of Aberdeen Central (girls basketball).

The recognition seeks to honor scholastic basketball coaches around the country who are educators and have achieved excellence on the floor, in the classroom and in the community that further embody the characteristics and legacy of Coach John Wooden.

The criteria for the award are rooted in the ideals of education, longevity, character, service and excellence.
