Coast Guard, fire department rescue ten people from raft off Sagamore Beach

SAGAMORE — At roughly 2:09 p.m.,

A raft carrying 10 people drifted out to sea off the coast of Sagamore Beach, according to Peter Halliday, a captain at the Sandwich Fire Department.

After the anchor of their raft came loose, 10 individuals from two families, including children, became caught in the ocean's current and were pushed out to sea.

One of the adults aboard the raft had a cell phone, and called the Sandwich Fire Department, who immediately responded to the incident, said Halliday.

The Coast Guard also simultaneously responded.

"Our boats got out there pretty quick and we wrapped everything up pretty quick," he said. "Nobody had any complaints — other than being adrift."

While Halliday couldn't release the names of those involved in the incident, he said the two families were vacationers.

Halliday said there have been a few other rafts that weren't anchored throughout the summer season that have also blown out to sea.

"The winds have been pretty high lately," he said. "We've seen a few rafts get pushed out in the last week-and-a-half."
