These are the Tennessee cities where population decreased, increased the most

All but one of Tennessee's major cities saw big population jumps over the past five years, according to a recent analysis.

SmartAsset, a financial technology company, ranked 344 of the largest U.S. cities based on the largest population declines over five years between 2017 and 2022.

According to SmartAsset, when populations decrease, it can affect the housing market, small businesses, employment and other factors. It is best to pay attention to changes like these so residents and businesses can better prepare themselves for high or slow traffic.

Here are the biggest increases and decreases in population in the state of Tennessee and the United States.

Which Tennessee cities saw large decreases in population over 5 years?

For most people, it is no surprise to see Memphis as a city in Tennessee with a major population decline. Not only is it the largest decrease in population in Tennessee, it is the only major Tennessee city with a significant population decrease over the past five years.

Memphis ranked at No. 27 with a 4.78% population decrease. According to SmartAsset, Memphis had a population of 621,050 in 2022, down from 652,231 in 2017. Over 30,000 people moved out of the city in those five years.

Which Tennessee cities saw increases in population over 5 years?

Rather than splitting into two lists, both the largest decreases and increases are put together. So, the closer a city is to 1, the larger the decrease, and the closer a city is to 344, the larger the increase.

Murfreesboro ranked at No. 329. It has a population of 162,402 in 2022. This is a 19% increase from the 2017 population of 136,372.

Clarksville made the list at No. 323. The population in the city grew 15.51% over five years. During this time, the population went from 153,210 in 2017 to 176,977 in 2022.

Knoxville landed at No. 239 on the list. The city's population was 187,344 in 2017 and grew 4.55%. In 2022, the population was 195,871.

Chattanooga ranked at No. 194 with 2.76%.In 2017, the population was 179,130, and in 2022, the population was 184,071.

Nashville-Davidson had the smallest growth with 2.65% between 2017 and 2022. The area had a population of 665,967 in 2017 and 683,639 in 2022.

Where are people from Memphis moving to?

Shelby County was estimated to have a population of 916,371 in 2022. This is a 0.21% drop from 936,012 in 2017. Thus, while large numbers of people are moving out of the Memphis city limits, many of them are not moving out of Shelby County.

Germantown was estimated to have a population of 40,816 in 2022. This is a 4.22% increase from 39,163 in 2017. Collierville had a population of 50,294 in 2017. This grew 2.58% in 2022 to 51,594.

Lakeland had an estimated population of 13,772 in 2022 and 12,609 in 2017 which is a 9.22% increase. Arlington had 11,700 people living there in 2017 and in 2022, it grew 23% to 14,395. Oakland's population was estimated to be up 27% at 10,028 in 2022 from 7,892 in 2017.

In Olive Branch, the 2022 estimated population was 47,086. This was a 25.2% jump from 37,610 in 2017. Southaven had a population of 54,244 in 2017 which grew 3.9% to 56,360 in 2022.
