Tennessee football to play North Carolina State in Charlotte in 2024
Tennessee football will play North Carolina State in Charlotte in the 2024 Duke’s Mayo Classic to replace the Vols’ previously scheduled game against Oklahoma.
It will be played on Sept. 7, 2024 at Bank of America Stadium, home of the Carolina Panthers and the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Tennessee last played there in a 40-14 loss to West Virginia to open the 2018 season.
Tennessee and North Carolina State have played three times. In their last meeting in 2012, the Vols beat the Wolfpack 35-21 in another neutral site game in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.

Charlotte is close to a midpoint between the schools. North Carolina State is located about 165 miles from Bank of America Stadium. Tennessee's campus is 230 miles from the game site.
Tennessee's other 2024 nonconference games will be at home against Chattanooga (Aug. 31), Kent State (Sept. 14) and UTEP (Nov. 23).
Here's where Tennessee will spend money from game
A replacement game in 2024 was needed after the SEC directed Tennessee to not play its home-and-home series with Oklahoma because the Sooners were joining the SEC. Oklahoma and Texas will be SEC members beginning in the 2024 football season.
Each school will receive the greater of either $4 million or 45% of net revenue from the Duke’s Mayo Classic. That money will go directly into funding Tennessee's expansion of the Anderson Training Center, the Vols’ football facility, according to a university press release.
“We appreciate the Charlotte Sports Foundation and N.C. State on executing a game of this caliber on short notice,” Tennessee athletics director Danny White said in a statement Tuesday. “This is another terrific opportunity for our football program and Vol Nation to showcase our brand in one of college football’s perennial marquee contests.”
Tennessee will play neutral site nonconference games in the regular season in three straight seasons. The Vols open the 2023 season against Virginia at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium. And in 2025, they will play Syracuse in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.
