Tennessee football will be the visiting team vs Purdue at Music City Bowl in Nashville. Here's why

Tennessee will be the visiting team at the TransPerfect Music City Bowl, technically.

The Vols will be on the East sideline of Nissan Stadium in Nashville, usually reserved for the visiting team for Tennessee Titans games played there.

And UT will wear visiting colors. Presumably, that will include white jerseys, but the team has not announced its uniform combinations.

UT (7-5) will play Purdue (8-4) in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30 (3 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Obviously, UT is closer to the bowl site. Neyland Stadium is about 180 miles from Nissan Stadium. Purdue’s Ross-Ade Stadium is about 350 miles away.

So why are the Vols the visitor? The Music City Bowl alternates the home and away designations each year between the SEC and Big Ten teams.

Next year, the SEC representative will be the home team. But the Vols will be the visitor for this one.

UT has a 5-3 record at home and 2-2 on the road this season. Expect Nissan Stadium to feel more like a home game, as UT fans make the short trip to Nashville for the in-state bowl game.

Purdue went 4-2 at home and 4-2 on the road.

The Music City Bowl has had six sellouts since it began in 1998, and two of those were UT's trips there in 2010 and 2016. So there should be plenty of orange and white in Nissan Stadium, even though the Vols will be the visitor.
