Tennessee football's Jaylen McCollough is not suspended after arrest, Josh Heupel says
UPDATE, OCT. 21, 2022: Tennessee safety Jaylen McCollough will not be subject to any sanctions by the University of Tennessee stemming from his arrest earlier this month on a charge of aggravated assault, his attorney told Knox News on Friday.
"After a thorough investigation into allegations related to an incident occurring on October 9th, 2022, Jaylen McCollough has resolved this matter with the University of Tennessee’s Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards," attorney Chloe Akers said in a statement.
"As part of an Alternative Resolution Agreement, there was no finding of responsibility against Mr. McCollough for any violations of the University’s Code of Conduct. He remains fully enrolled as a student without suspension or probation."
Tennessee safety Jaylen McCollough, who faces a felony aggravated assault charge, has not been suspended, coach Josh Heupel said.
McCollough did not play in the Vols' 52-49 win over Alabama. Before the game, a Tennessee spokesperson announced McCollough was inactive for the game. He was not suspended because that means he would not be allowed in the football facility or to take part in team meetings.
"(McCollough) is not suspended. He has been around," Heupel said. "(He) just wasn't available for Saturday. The process is still going on with him, and we’ll see how that continues to play out here. We look forward to having him available soon."
On Monday, Heupel clarified McCollough's status during his weekly media conference.
McCollough was arrested and charged on Oct. 9, but his attorney asserted “his complete innocence” in a statement.
McCollough is a four-year starter, and Tennessee's secondary was already shorthanded. Cornerback Warren Burrell is out for the season because of an upper-body injury. Cornerback Kamal Hadden missed the Alabama game with an unspecified injury.
Against Alabama, the Vols used nine defensive backs, including walk-on William Wright, and allowed Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young to pass for 455 yards. The Vols rank No. 129 among 131 FBS teams in pass defense.
No. 4 Tennessee (6-0) plays UT Martin (4-2) on Saturday (noon ET, SEC Network) for its homecoming game at Neyland Stadium.
