Tennessee Titans are firing general manager Jon Robinson, the team announced Tuesday.

Robinson was hired as the Titans' general manager in 2016 and has been the team's executive vice president since 2017. Titans executive vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden will take over for Robinson in an interim basis but the team announced a search for Robinson's full-time replacement will begin following the season.

"Since becoming controlling owner in 2015, my goal has been to raise the standard for what is expected in all facets of our organization," Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "I believe we have made significant progress both on and off the field through investments in leadership, personnel and new ideas. This progress includes the core of our business, the football team itself, which is regularly evaluated both by results (wins and losses) and team construction/roster building. I am proud of what we have accomplished in my eight seasons of ownership, but I believe there is more to be done and higher aspirations to be met.

I want to thank Jon for his dedicated work to set this organization on an upward trajectory and I wish him and his family the best."

Under Robinson's leadership, the Titans made it to the postseason four times. They have a 7-5 record this season and lead the AFC South by three games. The Titans advanced to the AFC Championship game in 2020 after earning an wild card berth in the 2019 season and have won the AFC South each of the past two seasons.

Robinson supervised the hiring of Titans coach Mike Vrabel in 2018, who in 2021 was named the NFL's coach of the year.

A first-time general manager who had previously worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, Robinson caught flak this offseason for failing to extend the contract of star wide receiver A.J. Brown, who, the Titans ultimately traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for draft picks. Two days before Robinson's firing, the Titans lost 35-10 to the Eagles in a game in which Brown caught two touchdowns.
