Tennessee Titans restructure Zach Cunningham's contract, create needed cap space | Source

The Tennessee Titans have given themselves more financial flexibility.

The Titans restructured Zach Cunningham's contract to save $6.456 million against the 2022 salary cap, a source with direct knowledge of the move confirmed to The Tennessean. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity, as teams do not typically announce contract restructures.

Before the move, the Titans were unofficially just $658,210 under cap, according to the salary cap site Over The Cap, which monitors cap space of NFL teams. So while work remains to be done, Tennessee is in better position to make a potential trade or be active in free agency to bolster its roster.

The team has a number of holes on offense, including tight end, receiver and the offensive line. With Julio Jones' release, finding a No. 2 receiver to star A.J. Brown could be a priority.

The restructure locks in Cunningham, 27, as a core part of the Titans' future. He emerged as Tennessee's top inside linebacker after being claimed off waivers from the Houston Texans in December. He posted 26 tackles, including three for loss, in four games with the Titans last season.

Cunningham is under contract through 2024.

ESPN first reported that the Titans were restructuring the linebacker's contract.
