Mike Vrabel, Ryan Tannehill on what plagued Tennessee Titans in loss to Buffalo Bills

Moving on from Tennessee's 41-7 loss against the Buffalo Bills on Monday, coach Mike Vrabel emphasized Wednesday the importance of the Titans getting out of their own way.

Penalties stymied the Titans' offense before it was too late.

"You have to go play, you have to try to have a goal and try to figure out what you want and then try to get out of the way," Vrabel said Wednesday. "Sometimes we get in our own way too much."

The Titans had nine penalties for 87 yards against the Bills. A crippling example came at the end of the second quarter with 12:15 to go. With the game tied at 7, quarterback Ryan Tannehill connected with receiver Robert Woods for 17 yards on second and long, but center Ben Jones was called for a face mask, killing the big gain. The drive stalled two plays later.

"And at the end of the day, it just comes down to the playing clean football, not hurting ourselves with dumb mistakes or penalties and being able to sustain drives," Tannehill said. "If we do that, we'll be in good shape … we hurt ourselves, putting ourselves in longer-down distance situations this past week. There were some penalties, negative plays. They really backed us up, kind of killed some drives with that. So being able to stay in third-and-manageable situations and then when we do get those opportunities, we gotta convert."
