Tennessee Voices, Episode 242: Muna Muday, senior program manager, The Addis Clinic
Muna Muday's parents fled from Somalia to a refugee camp where she was born. She spent a decade in the camps.
She considers herself lucky because so many children died of malnourishment and girls were at risk for early marriage and genital mutilation.
Muday praises her "feminist" father's vision for fighting to bring the family to the United States to pursue better opportunities, thanks to Catholic Charities, which helps settle refugees in the United States.
Muday holds a bachelor's degree from Tennessee State University and a master's from Vanderbilt University in public health, and today, she is senior program manager of The Addis Clinic, a nonprofit which uses telehealth to serve underserved areas around the world.
The clinic is named after the capital of Ethiopia, which is the seat of the African Union.
Muday spoke about her life and work on this episode of the Tennessee Voices podcast.
She recently wrote a guest essay, positing that "Nashville can become the global hub of nonprofit healthcare innovation."
"For the more than 500 healthcare companies that call Nashville home, our rich cultural diversity can be used to provide more culturally-sensitive and patient-centered care to their diverse clienteles," she wrote.
