Tennessee Voices, Episode 270: Matt Cheek, Lindsey Hamilton and Holly Tilden, Nashville Teacher Residency
Teacher burnout and retention were already challenges before COVID-19 emerged in 2020, but the need to train educators is even more urgent than ever.
One organization that focuses on training new teachers to lead underserved middle and high public schools classrooms in Music City is the Nashville Teacher Residency.
The organization started in 2016 and has grown to serve a diverse pool of candidates who are trained to be teachers in a classroom setting and under the tutelage of mentor educators.
On this episode of the Tennessee Voices video podcast, NTR Executive Director Holly Tilden, Director of Projects and Equity Lindsey Hamilton, and Director of Development and Strategic Partnerships Matt Cheek spoke about their mission and their work.
The goal is to honor the dignity of every student by providing a highly-trained teacher who will seek to stay in the classroom.
Community support, leadership and compensation are issues that can determine whether teachers stay in the profession. In past years, I had the chance to explore these issues with educators in a series called Teacher Talks.
Receiving skills and building a network can go a ways to help retain educators who are badly needed in the classroom today.
