Tennis: Mamaroneck and Byram Hills win Section 1 team titles

The Mamaroneck boys tennis team did something Wednesday that hasn't been done before.

Facing a tough Scarsdale team Wednesday for the first ever Section 1 Division 1 boys team championship, the Tigers won the match 4-1 at Harrison High School.

"It's thrilling," Mamaroneck coach Tim Hooker said. "This was something I thought we had a chance at all season with this group of guys some of them I've had for four years and some real young talent. I knew there were these big schools to worry about like Horace Greeley, a deep amazing team that we beat in the semifinals (Tuesday night). Then having Scarsdale in the finals was another tough obstacle."

The turning point in the match for the Tigers was play of their senior doubles team of Conrad Gorski and Nate McMillan.

"They're both my captains and have been with the team for four years," Hooker said. "We needed them to lock in and not over hit — to be patient and playing the point longer. Seeing the captains come off the court, our fourth singles player (freshman Jinyang Li) he went for it and it was beautiful."
