Tepid global response to 2014 annexation of Crimea enabled Russia’s full-scale invasion, Zelenskyy says

Zelesnkyy added that negotiating with Russia is currently not an option, as the Kremlin is still aiming to destroy the Ukrainian state.

“They made that decision (to invade and annex Crimea) in 2014, and the world didn’t punch them in the face for it – so they pressed on,” said Zelenskyy.

“We’re giving them a good thrashing right now.”

The president earlier said that a full Russian withdrawal from all of Ukraine’s territories is a necessary precondition for any peace negotiations with Moscow.

Zelensky has previously stated that show trials for Ukrainian defenders in Russian captivity, or sham referendums on the “annexation” of Ukrainian territory to Russia, would be viewed as a Russian refusal to negotiate.
