Terence Crutcher Foundation partners with organizations to bring historical marker to Greenwood

Six years ago this week, Terence Crutcher was killed during a traffic stop in north Tulsa. Tulsa police officer Betty Jo Shelby was found not guilty of first-degree manslaughter for the shooting.

To honor his life, the Terence Crutcher Foundation and other groups are hosting events this week, aimed at sparking conversations and action.

The foundation has also partnered with OSU Tulsa, the Tulsa Community Remembrance Coalition, and the Equal Justice Initiative for a marker in Greenwood.

The readings on the marker aren’t about what happened in 1921, but rather the founders of Greenwood.

Dr. Tiffany Crutcher, Terence’s twin sister and founder of the Terence Crutcher Foundation, said this marker is a way to help tell his story and preserve Greenwood’s history.

“We believe that this marker will do just that, and it’s cemented on this sacred land on this campus,” said Dr. Crutcher.

There are events scheduled all week in Terence’s name and honor, including a day of service this Saturday. “We’re going to put on a water drive for our neighbors in Mississippi. We will be highlighting a lot of smaller local organizations awarding them with micro grants,” said Dr. Crutcher.
