What are the term limits for Knoxville mayor and city council? How many terms do candidates have left?

For its major elected positions, Knoxville has strict term limits. In fact, mayors and city council members are limited to serving only two four-year terms, according to the city charter, which means many aim to make the most of their time in office.

“No person shall be eligible to serve in any elected office authorized or created by the charter of the city of Knoxville if during the previous two (2) terms of that office, the person in question has served more than a single term,” the charter states.

Mayor Indya Kincannon was already elected to her second term after winning a majority of votes in the primary election.

Election day is Nov. 7 with early voting open through Nov. 2.

As you head to the polls, here’s a helpful reminder of how many potential terms the candidates for mayor and city council have left.

Voters can cast their primary election ballots in city elections Aug. 29. The general election is Nov. 7, 2023.
