COLUMBIA – The University of South Carolina Board of Trustees approval the terms of new South Carolina outside linebackers/edge rushers coach Sterling Lucas Friday afternoon during its called meeting at the Alumni Center.

Coming from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Lucas signed has two-year deal with the Gamecocks, worth $350,000 annually.

The deal begins Jan. 15, 2022 and runs through Dec. 31, 2023.

If Lucas accepts another coaching job or terminates the contract in its first year, he'll be on the hook for $200,000 and that figure drops to $100,000 if he leaves after the first year is completed. If the university terminates his contract without cause before it expires, he'll be owed the remainder on the deal.

Lucas, an Orangeburg, South Carolina native and North Carolina State alum, will fill the position vacated by Mike Peterson, who left Columbia for a similar role on Billy Napier's coaching staff at Florida more than a week ago. Peterson was on staff at USC for six years.

In his first collegiate assistant job, Lucas will make $70,000 less than Peterson was making annually at the time of his exit last week.

It'll be the first time in Lucas' career that he's occupied an active recruiting role for a college team. Following his playing days at North Carolina State, he returned to Raleigh as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach for two seasons.

Lucas has spent the last six years coaching in the NFL, the first five with the Baltimore Ravens in a few capacities before being hired by Urban Meyer as an assistant defensive line in Jacksonville for the 2021 season.

With the Jaguars this year, Lucas worked alongside Tosh Lupoi, who coached under the biggest name in college football in Nick Saban at Alabama for several seasons before making the jump to the league. Lucas has certainly picked up plenty from Lupoi and could bring some fresh ideas to the South Carolina defensive coaching staff.

Current USC defensive coordinator Clayton White coached special teams and safeties at N.C. State while Lucas was there.
