FREMONT — Terra State Community College has been awarded more than $300,000 in federal funds that will go toward its industrial electricity program, a college administrator said Wednesday.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced earlier this week that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $349,535 grant to Terra State Community College to fund a trade skills program in Northwest Ohio.

According to a release from Brown's office, students who enter this program will gain technical skills and learn more about employment opportunities in the manufacturing and electrical industries.

The project aims to better prepare students for opportunities in STEM-related career fields with relevant classwork and industry experience.

Cory Stine, Terra State's senior vice president of innovation and strategic planning, said the funds are going toward curriculum review for the college's industrial electricity programs.

Stine said Wednesday the federal money will be used to redesign the curriculum in Terra State's industrial electricity programs.

He said Michael Holewinski, Terra State's assistant professor in the college's electricity programs, would be heading up the redesign.

"He is overseeing and guiding the redesign of three electrical classes to better meet the  needs of employers," Stine said.

Stine said Holewinski will use the grant over three years to develop skills needed to help students in that electricity program.

He said that, at the end of every class, students will go through a verification process to show employers they have acquired the skills need to work at those companies.

"They chose electricity because it's in such demand with local employers," Stine said.
