EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Do you need some afternoon energy? Maybe you’re trying to bulk up with a high-protein diet, or you’re on the Keto diet, or just have a sweet tooth and want a low-calorie treat.
Franklin Nutrition can take care of all that and more. Blake Kramer and Felicity Graf are the owners. Kramer opened his first healthy coffee, smoothie and more shop in Terre Haute two and a half years ago.
“I was a student and an athlete at (Indiana State University) and I was looking for healthy food options that were affordable for students,” he said. “It seems that eating healthy is getting more and more expensive. The better you eat the more you spend, but if you eat worse you end up spending it later in doctor bills.”
Kramer’s family owned a healthy smoothie shop in Elkhart and he decided to do something similar with his own twist and a cool coffee shop vibe and a price point appealing to students; soon, he opened Fifth Street Nutrition in downtown Terre Haute.
“I’ve wanted to be a business owner all my life and not have a boss to report to, so I took advantage of the opportunity,” he said. “We listen to our customers about where we should expand to next, and this is our tenth location in the west central Indiana region. The names of each store are specific to the city where they are located.”
On the menu you’ll find high-protein smoothies, protein coffees, and energy drinks in a wide range to fit customers’ desires.
The products are made by Herbalife Nutrition.
“We found the company practices sustainable usage of products and they have a unique business structure that we can shape the way we want,” Kramer said.
He’s proud to pay employees a good wage and looks forward to community sponsorships in the near future.
“It’s good that people can know that the money they spend here will stay in the community,” he said.
What to drink
Protein coffee is a creamy coffee beverage with added protein that may be enjoyed hot or iced. The dozen flavors range from raspberry mocha to salted caramel macchiato.
Energy bombs contain B vitamins, panax ginseng, guarana and L-Taurine. A 16-ounce serving has only 20 calories and four carbs.
“They taste amazing, have fruity flavors with some caffeine and lots of b vitamins so you get some stimulant energy and natural energy and not just energy from sugar,” Kramer said. “You give your body good vitamins and you won’t see a crash afterwards. This is one of the things we put our spin on. You won’t go to the Herbalife site and find Energy Bombs, it’s the way we mix the ingredients to make our own product.”
Aloe refreshers are made with juice of the aloe plant and have no caffeine.
“We add aloe and take away the caffeine so it’s a great option for kids,” Kramer sad. “The aloe vera helps with digestive health. With any smoothie, you get a complimentary shot of aloe because it helps absorb the nutrients in a smoothie.”
Smoothies have 21 vitamins and minerals and concentrated protein for a relatively low number of calories. The smoothies are blended with creamy protein mix, ice and water without the addition of dairy products or nut milks.
More than 80 flavors are offered. Fruity Pebbles, strawberry pie, Mexican wedding cake, caramel corn and bananas Foster are only a few. The nutritionals will vary depending on the type of protein powder and extras, so if you’re looking for a specific nutritional profile, ask for one that fits your needs. Smoothies are accompanied by a complimentary shot of fruity aloe and a flavored tea. We had a brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tart smoothie and it was creamy, sweet, delicious and was a full meal replacement with under 15 carbs and around 200 calories.
Enhancers such as extra protein or fiber, kids’ vitamins, and probiotics are available.
