Tesla gets green light to manufacture in China
Tesla on Thursday got the green light to start manufacturing in China, giving the electric carmaker access to the world's biggest car market.
The company was added to a government list of approved auto manufacturers, making it the first fully foreign-owned car plant in China and reflecting a broader shift by Beijing to open up its car market.
Tesla - run by Elon Musk, is currently building a $2 billion car manufacturing factory in Shanghai - its first one overseas, where it plans to produce at least 1,000 Model 3s a week by the end of this year.
The move would help the company avoid higher import tariffs imposed on cars coming from the U.S.
And its getting some help from Shanghai authorities, which have offered Tesla assistance to speed up construction.
