Tesla halts Shanghai output over new lockdown

STORY: Tesla is suspending output at its Shanghai factory as the city goes into a new lockdown.

That’s according to two Reuters sources.

The electric car maker is said to be suspending production for four days.

Tesla had hoped to continue working by creating a closed loop, where workers live and sleep at the plant.

However, one source said it allowed staff to leave after concluding it didn’t have enough provisions for them.

The firm would only say that it strived to fulfil its epidemic-prevention responsibilities.

Shanghai said Sunday (March 27) that it would lock down in two stages to conduct mass virus testing.

Tesla’s plant is in the first-stage area.

Its lockdown started Monday (March 28) morning, and is due to last until Friday (April 1) morning.

Tesla’s Shanghai factory produces cars for the China market, and is a crucial export hub for Germany and Japan.

It delivered over 56,000 cars in February.
