Tesla Model 3: Pre-orders For Elon Musk’s Affordable Electric Car Hit 276,000 In Just Three Days
Pre-orders for Tesla’s most affordable electric car yet have reached a staggering 276,000 just three days after it was launched.
Unveiled on 31 March, the Model 3 is designed to travel at least 215 miles (346km) on a single charge and comes with a $35,000 (£24,500) price tag making it considerably cheaper than other Tesla car models.
The electric car maker opened up pre-orders last week, at a cost of £1,000 per customer so the company has already made a considerable amount of cash before buyers have even had a test drive.
The semi-autonomous Model 3 comes with autopilot hardware enabling it to automatically change. The vehicle also features fast charging capabilities.
The unprecedented demand means that Tesla may have to rethink the initial planned delivery date of late 2017.
When pre-orders reached the 200,000 mark, Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk tweeted: “Definitely going to need to rethink production planning.”
Model 3 pre-orders are limited to two per person.
The company expects to produce up to 500,000 of the cars every year once production is up and running.
