Tesla set for first delivery of China-made cars

Construction only started in January, but Tesla says it will deliver the first cars from its inaugural Chinese factory on Monday (December 30).

That will be just 357 days after it started work on the new plant, a record turnaround for major automakers in China.

The Shanghai facility is part of Tesla's plans to grow in the world's largest car market.

It already treats the country differently, with marketing that includes racing events and showroom parties.

The new plant will produce the Model 3 sedan and later the Model Y compact SUV.

Now the company aims to produce 250,000 vehicles a year at what is the first wholly foreign-owned car plant in China.

But competition could get tougher, and sooner than expected.

On Friday (December 27) Volkswagen said it was ahead of schedule on going electric.

It now expects to produce its millionth EV by late 2023, two years earlier than expected.
