Conejo Valley Tesla fans rejoice: a new showroom will open doors by 2024.

The Thousand Oaks Planning Commission granted a special use permit Monday for Tesla Motors to move into a 50,000-square-foot industrial space in Newbury Park. The permit allows the space to be used for a car showroom and service center despite its original designation for industrial use.

The dealership will located be at 2000 Corporate Center Drive, north of Highway 101 off Rancho Conejo Boulevard.

Tesla operates on a direct-to-consumer model, with no vehicles stored on-site other than test models. Vehicles can be tested and purchased at the showroom but are made to order. Because all Tesla models are electric, the service center operates indoors without needing oil or other hazardous materials.

At the commission meeting Monday night, Assistant Planner Tabitha McAtee said the permit imposes site-specific conditions for the project, such as not allowing Tesla to perform auto body or painting work at the site.

Tesla representative Diana Tran spoke to the commission about the project, saying the location was selected to expand Tesla's footprint in Ventura County. The two nearest Tesla dealerships are located in Camarillo and Agoura Hills.

"Our goal is to increase Tesla ownership in the surrounding area," Tran said.
