Testimony wraps up in trial of security guard accused of murder over music

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Testimony in the trial of a security guard accused of killing a man over loud music at an East Memphis gas station is over.

The defendant, 57-year-old Greg Livingston, chose not to testify. Livingston, a security guard at the time, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Alvin Motley, a 48-year-old man visiting from Chicago.

Kroger security guard indicted for killing man over loud music

Prosecution and defense took most of the day reviewing crime scene evidence from the fatal 2021 shooting at an East Memphis Kroger gas station and questioning investigators who made the scene.

Jurors again watched the video of the encounter between Livingston and Motley after the defendant reportedly said something to Motley about loud music coming from his vehicle.

Livingston has maintained he shot Motley, in his words, ” in fear for his life” after Motley would not stop approaching him. The prosecution maintains Motley had a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other and posed no threat to Livingston.

Both sides rested their cases Thursday. Deliberations are expected to begin Friday morning.
