Testing 1, 2, 3: Soggy reaction to super sweet Froot Loops Cereal Flavored Milk

It’s that back-to-school time of year.

Up before the sun.

“I can’t find my shoe.”  “What happened to my homework?” Panic! Panic!

What about breakfast? No time for that!

Maybe there is time. Nestle’s and the Kellogg’s folks recently pooled resources to develop a quick and tasty breakfast option.  Appearing in local markets earlier this year, Froot Loops Cereal Flavored Milk was created to mimic the sweet “after milk” flavor in a bowl of cereal. This newbie, along with Cinnamon Toast Crunch Flavored Milk, offer a grab-and-go breakfast for those on the run.

Testers Joe Knightlinger of Wayne County along with Ashland County’s Stephanie Schaefer and Vicky Shammo were presented with the Froot Loops version and immediately picked up on its namesake’s persona.

In fact, Shammo pronounced it a suitable option.  “This tastes like the milk after you finish the actual cereal,” she said.

Super sweet and super fruity also suited Knightlinger.

“I would drink this for breakfast or any time of day though for me it would be more of a morning drink,” he said.

On the other hand, Schaefer was not overly impressed.

“It was too fruity for me,” she declared, noting that she might buy this as a snack treat for her grandchildren though not for herself.

Over-the-top sweetness

To me, the sweetness was way over the top, though there was a time in my life that I would have rated it A+. As I have moved through life’s decades (seven plus, if you really must know), sugariness just isn’t that appealing (except for my daughter’s cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies). Is this good? Maybe, maybe not. One thing for sure, it isn’t nearly as fun.

Nutritionally, this milk has several things going for it. It is real milk, low-fat milk at that. It is gluten free and provides 28% of daily protein needs, 20% vitamin D, 25% vitamin A and 35% calcium.

On the downside is sugar (though not the high fructose corn syrup type).  A one-serving 14-ounce bottle (costing $1.68) contains 36% of the recommended daily allowance.

This and other product info is detailed on the label, easily identifiable by Froot Loops’ Toucan Sam’s colorful caricature front and center.

Now to decide. Is this a workable solution for your family as opposed to an out-the-door, no time for breakfast routine. When thinking this through, give this unknown punster’s viewpoint consideration.

“You should always look in a mirror before making a big decision. It helps you reflect.”
