TEWKSBURY, MA — Contrary to rumors, Tewksbury officials were not considering a mask mandate or vaccine passport, Board of Health Chair Raymond Barry said at the board's emergency meeting Friday.

"There's nothing like that even on our plate to consider today," Barry said.

In fact, Barry said, while the town's two-week average case count continued to rise in the latest state town-by-town report Thursday, the number of active cases in town fell.

"It's going in the correct direction," he said.

As of Friday, there are 394 active cases in town, down 105 from a week prior, according to the town dashboard.

Statewide metrics including the positive rate and wastewater data also show the omicron surge has peaked and infections are declining.

According to the community-level report, which covers a two-week period, Tewksbury had 1,232 cases over the last 14 days, up from 693 in the prior report. The positive rate rose from 16.12 percent to 23.58 percent.
