Texans heard Whatburger was giving out free burgers. Restaurant app crashed by lunchtime

All they wanted was a free Whataburger burger.

The Texas-based restaurant was handing out free burgers to mark 73 years of service Tuesday. By lunchtime, scores of social media posters were reporting that the Whataburger app was crashing as they attempted to redeem their free burger coupon.

Whataburger had this to say about the system slowdowns:

“Wow, you really crashed our party during lunchtime! We apologize for the inconvenience. Our app is back up and running again. If you were in our restaurants, our Family Members took care of you and our Customer Care team is hard at work making it right for those of you who have reached out. Thanks for celebrating with us today! You have made our 73 years amazing, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store next!”

Whataburger publicized a promotion for rewards members through its app to celebrate their big day. The only thing patrons needed to do is download the app, make an account and make at least one order through the app.

Many Whataburger fans were quick to post their disappointment on the app’s slowdown.

While Whataburger had its detractors, other patrons were happy to celebrate the Texas staple.
