The Houston Texans crushed the Jacksonville Jaguars 37-21 in Week 1 at NRG Stadium. The Texans start off 2021 with a 1-0 record, not only overall, but in the AFC South.

According to Nick Wojton of the Touchdown Wire, the Texans, led by Tyrod Taylor’s 21-of-33 for 291 yards and two touchdowns, moved up from the bottom of the barrel in the latest power rankings.

OK, Tyrod. What a feel good story was the Texans QB in Week 1? Taylor, who has gotten the short end of things a couple of times in his career, had 331 total yards and two scores. But it was only the Jags. A long ways to go, but Houston… we’re out of the basement.

Even though it was “only the Jags,” Jacksonville was favored to beat the Texans. Houston were home underdogs going into the contest. While some even predicted the Texans would narrowly win the game, no one foresaw the Texans manhandling and dismantling the Jaguars the way they did. If not for the garbage touchdown surrendered at the end of the game, Houston would have beaten Jacksonville 37-14.

Although the Texans have gotten off to a great start in 2021, coach David Culley is realistic and knows they still have 16 more of these games to play.

“Right now, we are 1-0 and we played a division opponent, got a win, but remember this, this season is a marathon,” said Culley. “All people remember is what happens last, and once we start playing this next football game all that’s going to matter is what happens in that football game. But I feel really good about that and I slept really good last night.”

The Texans take on the Cleveland Browns Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at FirstEnergy Stadium. A win over a playoff team from a season ago would certainly call attention to how well Houston’s season could actually be.
