Texans WR Brandin Cooks says ‘you’ve got to want to be disciplined’

Brandin Cooks has been around successful players and coaches throughout his NFL career.

From 2014-16, Cooks spent time with the New Orleans Saints and presumptive Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and Super Bowl-winning coach Sean Payton. In 2017, he spent a season with the New England Patriots before going to the Los Angeles Rams for the next two seasons, even appearing in a Super Bowl in 2018 to challenge his former team, the Patriots.

According to the 28-year-old receiver, discipline comes from within.

“I think that’s one of those things that you have to take on individually to be honest with you,” Cooks said after the Texans’ 31-3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts Sunday afternoon. “You can’t make anyone disciplined, you’ve got to want to be disciplined. You have to practice that way. Not just practice that way, you have to be in the meeting rooms that way, take care of your body.”

Cooks provided the Texans with nine catches for 89 yards, leading Houston in both categories.

“Success is not a given,” Cooks said. “Discipline is not a given. It’s about everyday life choices. It’s about deep down inside individually, do you want to be there or not? It’s as simple as that. We can’t make our teammates, we can’t make anyone else do that. You have to do that by yourself.”

The Texans will have to find a way to individually cultivate discipline as they prepare to take on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7 at State Farm Stadium.
