Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on Wednesday his support for former President Donald Trump and his bid to return to the nation's highest office.

In an endorsement message on Twitter, Paxton recounted Trump's presidency from 2017 to 2021 and cited Trump's efforts related to border security, economic opportunity and protecting freedoms and the nation's reputation abroad.

"I am proud to endorse his campaign for President so that he can once again put America First & heal our nation," Paxton posted in response to Trump's campaign announcement that came late on Tuesday.

The former president announced his 2024 presidential bid to supporters who had gathered Tuesday night at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's home in Palm Beach, Florida.

"In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States," Trump said.

Stopping short of giving an endorsement, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick congratulated Trump on his foray back into a campaign season, saying the former president is the candidate Democrats will fear the most in 2024.

"After two more years of President Biden and the leftist policies of the Democrats, Americans will be ready for America to be Great Again," Patrick said in a Facebook post Tuesday night.

Representatives of the Texas attorney general's office, lieutenant governor's office and Gov. Greg Abbott have not yet responded to requests from the American-Statesman for comment.

If elected, Trump would be limited to serving only one term because of the rules set by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which allows a person to serve no more than two terms as president.

A successful presidential bid for Trump in 2024 would make him only the second president in American history to serve two terms nonconsecutively. President Grover Cleveland served as the nation's 22nd and 24th president (1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897) with president Benjamin Harrison serving in between Cleveland's terms.
