Texas basketball lands in the top five of the first AP Poll

While many fans have already chalked up the football season for Texas, the basketball team is being regarded as one of the best in the nation.

After a disappointing end to the season last year, Texas decided to go its separate ways with Shaka Smart and eventually brought in former Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard.

Shortly after arriving in Austin, Beard took advantage of the new one-time transfer rule and has assembled an elite team that can compete for a championship immediately. The impressive haul included the No. 1 transfer in the country, Marcus Carr.

The hype around the program has been gradually building throughout the offseason, and has college basketball experts everywhere raving about this team and how deep they are.

On Monday, the first college basketball AP Poll was released. The top 10 features the usual suspects, but right smack in the middle are the Longhorns who landed at No. 5.

The Big 12’s level of basketball competition will be off the charts, as it is worth noting there are three top-10 teams who are members of the conference.

Will Texas be able to live up to the hype?
