Texas college football: Aggies rally for win; Andrew Body accounts for 3 TDs vs UTSA

ARLINGTON — Devon Achane rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown, Demani Richardson sprinted the final 82 yards on a wild fumble return for another score and No. 23 Texas A&M beat 10th-ranked Arkansas 23-21. The Razorbacks had a chance to take the lead with 1:30 remaining, but Cam Little’s 42-yard field goal attempt hit near the top of the right upright. Both teams are 3-1. The Razorbacks built an early 14-0 lead but missed out on consecutive 4-0 starts for the first time since the last 1980s. Texas A&M has back-to-back wins over ranked teams since losing to Appalachian State.

TCU 42, SMU 34

DALLAS — Max Duggan passed for 277 yards and three touchdowns and Emari Demercado ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns in TCU’s 42-34 win over SMU on Saturday as coach Sonny Dykes’ Frogs defeated the program that he coached the previous four seasons. Duggan threw 18 yards to Savion Williams in the first quarter, 8 yards to Jared Wiley in the second period and 80 yards on a shuffle-pass jet sweep to Derius Davis later in the second for the 3-0 Frogs. Tre Siggers scored three rushing touchdowns for the Mustangs, who are 2-2.

HOUSTON 34, RICE 27

HOUSTON — Nelson Ceaser returned a fumble for an 11-yard score with 3:34 left in the fourth quarter and Thabo Mwaniki intercepted a tipped pass on the next possession as Houston beat Rice 34-27 on Saturday to retain the Bayou Bucket for a record seventh consecutive time. Houston pinned Rice at its 6-yard line with 24 seconds left. The Owls made two catches to get to their 40 before clocking it at eight seconds. TJ McMahon launched it, Bradley Rozner came down with the ball in traffic at the Houston 9 and the officials ruled there was one second left. Rice had no timeouts remaining but Houston took one to set up its defense. McMahon was pressured into a rushed pass and it was batted down in the end zone.

TEXAS STATE 34, HOUSTON CHRISTIAN 0

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Layne Hatcher threw for 362 yards and four touchdowns and Texas State controlled from the outset in a 34-0 win over Houston Christian. Previously named Houston Baptist University, the school announced the name change to Houston Christian University on Wednesday. Hatcher completed 27-of-41 passes in the win. It gave him 100 completions in his first-four games as Bobcat, the most ever by a Texas State (2-2) quarterback after four games since the school moved to FBS level in 2012.

ABILENE CHRISTIAN 34, WESTERN NEW MEXICO 7

ABILENE, Texas — Ethan Long threw two touchdowns passes, Rovaughn Banks Jr. and Jermiah Dobbins each had more than 100 yards rushing and Abilene Christian cruised to a 34-7 victory over Division II-member Western New Mexico. Long was 22-of-34 passing for 251 yards. Banks had a pair of touchdown runs and finished with 143 yards rushing on 21 carries. Dobbins had 18 carries for 105 yards. Each of Banks’ scoring runs came in the second quarter and from inside the 5. Devin Larsen completed 21 of 44 passes for 165 yards with a touchdown and interception for Western New Mexico.

UTSA 52, TEXAS SOUTHERN 24

SAN ANTONIO — Frank Harris passed for 392 yards and four touchdowns, De’Corian Clark had three touchdown catches and UTSA pulled away in the second half to beat FCS-member Texas Southern 52-24. Harris threw a 69-yard scoring strike to Clark just 47 seconds into the third quarter to push a four-point halftime lead to a 28-17 advantage for UTSA (2-2). Harris added a 23-yard touchdown toss to Joshua Cephus later in the third quarter and hooked up with Zakhari Franklin for a 35-yarder 11 seconds into the fourth. Backup quarterback Eddie Lee Marburger connected with Clark for a 7-yard score to cap the scoring.

Andrew Body had 229 yards on 17-of-32 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Tigers (1-3). He added two touchdown runs. Jacorey Howard led all rushers with 88 yards on 12 carries.

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 25, ALABAMA STATE 15

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Tazon Conley threw for a touchdown and ran for two scores and Prairie View A&M never never trailed as it beat Alabama St. 25-15. Conley finished 14-for-19 passing for 180 yards with the touchdown and an interception. Jacory Merritt amassed 143 yards on 17 carries for Alabama State.

MEMPHIS 44, NORTH TEXAS 34

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Seth Henigan threw two touchdowns, Brandon Thomas rushed for two scores, Memphis’ defense scored twice and the Tigers beat North Texas 44-34. The start of each quarter following halftime helped contribute to the Mean Green’s demise. Jaylon Allen returned an Austine Aune pass which bounced off the hands of his intended receiver, fielded it at the 37-yard line and raced down the right sideline for a 27-13 lead to start the third quarter. After drawing within 27-20, to start the fourth, Xavier Cullens intercepted Aune — again at the North Texas 37 — and raced to the end zone for a two-touchdown advantage.
