Texas college football: Body throws 2 TDs in win; Baylor routs Texas Tech

BAYLOR 45, TEXAS TECH 17

LUBBOCK, Texas — Freshman Richard Reese ran for 148 yards and three touchdowns, AJ McCarty returned an interception for a score and Baylor beat Texas Tech 45-17. Baylor ended a 10-game losing streak in Lubbock while handing Texas Tech its first home loss under coach Joey McGuire. On a night Texas Tech celebrated star Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the eighth member of its ring of honor, the Red Raiders ended up throwing five interceptions while trying all of their top three QBs .

TEXAS SOUTHERN 37, LINCOLN (CALIF.) 2

HOUSTON (AP) — Miller grad Andrew Body threw a pair of touchdown passes and Texas Southern cruised past Division III-member Lincoln University of California, 37-2 on Saturday. Texas Southern kept the Oaklanders out of the end zone, allowing only a first-quarter safety. The Tigers allowed Lincoln (1-7) just 45 passing yards, while Elijah Holmes carried 18 times for 95 yards and Otis Weah carried 19 times for 90. Body completed 10 of 21 passes for 177 yards. LaDarius Owens led the Tigers (4-4) with 11 carries for 81 yards.

TCU 41, WEST VIRGINIA 31

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — No. 7 TCU improved to 8-0 after a 41-31 victory at West Virginia. Max Duggan threw three touchdown passes and Kendre Miller ran for 120 yards and a score for the Horned Frogs. TCU didn’t need a comeback from a double-digit deficit like it did in its two previous games. Duggan staked TCU to a 28-21 halftime lead and that held up. But West Virginia gave the Horned Frogs a fight. JT Daniels threw a 23-yard TD pass to Reese Smith with 4:12 left to cut the Mountaineers’ deficit to 34-31. But Duggan found Savion Williams with a 29-yard scoring toss on fourth down with 20 seconds left.

MISSISSIPPI 31, TEXAS A&M 28

COLLEGE STATION, Tex. — Quinshon Judkins rushed for 205 yards, Jaxson Dart passed for three touchdowns and No. 15 Mississippi beat Texas A&M 31-28. Judkins had a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:18 remaining, helping Mississippi rebound from its first loss of the season. Dart threw touchdown passes of 18, 1 and 2 yards. He was 13 for 20 for 140 yards, and also had 17 carries for 95 yards on the ground. Connor Weigman was 28 of 44 for 338 yards and four touchdowns for Texas A&M. The Aggies lost their fourth straight game for the school’s longest slide since losing four straight at the end of the 2005 season.

HOUSTON 42, SOUTH FLORIDA 27

HOUSTON — Clayton Tune passed for 380 yards and four touchdowns, Stacy Sneed rushed for two scores and Houston beat South Florida 42-27. Tune went over 10,000 career yards after finding Peyton Sawyer in the corner of the end zone to take a 28-14 lead with 55 seconds left before halftime. Tune’s fourth touchdown came on a 28-yard flea-flicker to KeSean Carter early in the fourth quarter. Tune was 31-of-37 passing for Houston. Nathaniel Dell caught nine passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns, and Carter added 102 yards receiving and one touchdown.

SMU 45, TULSA 34

TULSA, Okla. — Preston Stone passed to Rashee Rice for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and SMU never trailed in a 45-34 victory over Tulsa. Tyler Lavine followed with the first of his three short touchdown runs on the day and SMU (4-4, 2-2 American Athletic Conference) led 14-0 before the game was five minutes old. Lavine’s second scoring run helped the Mustangs take a 24-7 lead at halftime. Elijah Chapman scooped up a fumble and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter to push the Mustangs’ lead to 45-20.

SAM HOUSTON 40, TARLETON 21

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Zach Hrbacek rushed for an 80-yard touchdown on the second play of the game, Seth Morgan made four field goals, and Sam Houston eased by Tarleton 40-21. Sam Houston led 20-7 at halftime after intercepting Beau Allen three times. Dezmon Jackson added an 18-yard touchdown run early in the fourth for a 30-7 lead. Sam Houston DB Da’Veawn Armstead had back-to-back highlight plays to end the half. His strip sack with 53 seconds left ended in a 28-yard loss for Tarleton and he intercepted a tipped pass on the next play. Allen threw for 136 yards and one touchdown for Tarleton (5-3, 2-1).

NORTH TEXAS 40, WESTERN KENTUCKY 13

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Austin Aune threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns to get North Texas off to a quick start and the Mean Green finished strong to defeat Western Kentucky 40-13. Kaylon Horton turned a screen pass into a 28-yard score on the first possession for North Texas and Aune found Damon Ward for a 56-yard score on the second. The Hilltoppers got back in the game with Austin Reed’s 5-yard TD pass to Joshua Simon and a couple of field goals to trail 20-13 at the half.

LAMAR 24, NICHOLLS 17

BEAUMONT, Texas — Khalan Griffin ran for 131 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lamar to its first win of the season, a 24-17 victory over Nicholls. Kohen Granier’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Neno Lemay capped a 16-play, 98-yard drive that pulled Nicholls to 21-17 with 1:20 remaining in the third quarter. Chris Esqueda’s 26-yard field goal for Lamar (1-7, 1-3 Southland Conference) ended the scoring with 10:05 remaining. Nicholls drove to the Lamar 29 on its final drive but was stuffed a yard short on fourth-and-2 with three seconds to go.

PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 64, BETHUNE-COOKMAN 48

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Trazon Connley ran for four touchdowns and passed for a fifth to lead Prairie View A&M to a 64-48 win over Bethune-Cookman. The teams combined for 1,124 yards of offense with the Panthers taking control with touchdowns on four straight possessions in the second half, two of them started by turnovers. Connley scored on three straight possessions on runs of 4, 5 and 1 yard and iced it when Bryce Turner returned a fumble 21 yards for a touchdown in the final minute. Jaden Stewart carried 21 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, including one in the pivotal fourth quarter for the Panthers. Jalon Jones was 26-of-37 passing for 305 yards and three scores and ran for another for the Wildcats.
