Texas cop charged with murder of black woman

A former Texas police officer who shot and killed a black woman was charged with murder on Monday (October 14).

Fort Worth police say Aaron Dean has been jailed, and is being held on a $200,000 bond

Twenty-old-year-old Atatiana Jefferson was watching her young nephew Saturday (October 12) when a neighbor noticed her door was open and called police.

Body cam footage shows officers circling the home armed with guns and flashlights.

One of them approached an open window and fired one fatal shot.

"Put your hands up. Show me your hands." *Shoots*

A lawyer for the family says the nephew, eight year-old Zion, saw everything.

"Zion is going to start counseling this week because we don't know the emotional trauma the psychological trauma that seeing something like this can have on an 8 year old. He was present the entire time, he never left the room."

Fort Worth's interim Police Chief Edwin Kraus said he would have fired Dean, but the officer quit first.

Kraus said that under most circumstances, it was not police protocol to fire into an occupied home.

"I would say the only time that would be OK is if you knew that was the only person in there and they were actively firing upon you at the time."

Jefferson's death has stirred anger and grief in Fort Worth.

Mayor Betsy Price said the city will be conducting a review of police actions with the help of a panel of national experts.
