A House Democrat invited Vice President Kamala Harris to visit his district on the U.S.-Mexico border before the immigration "crisis" worsens.

"I write to invite you to the U.S. Southern Border to observe the ongoing humanitarian crisis and share the perspective of Americans who live there," Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas wrote in a letter to Harris Thursday.

The congressman's district stretches along 300 miles of international land. Cuellar, vice chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, said the surge in families, children, and adults coming across from Mexico primarily into South Texas is only expected to rise as the government inches closer to lifting a ban that prevented the entry of some families.

"The situation on the border will only worsen, as more migrants are expected to arrive," Cuellar wrote. "The Administration needs to take a proactive approach to create a sustainable system of humanitarian aid and relieve everyday Americans of that responsibility."

The significant rise in illegal migration since President Joe Biden took office in January has put a "severe" burden on the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo communities. A trip to his congressional district would entail meetings with the law enforcement, mayors, landowners, EMTs, and judges affected by the crisis.

"I have lived here my entire life and want to offer myself as a resource in solving these problems. I believe it is critical that you meet with local stakeholders and residents, consider their concerns, and use their lived experiences to implement more effective policies," Cuellar wrote.

Republicans have called on Biden and Harris to see the border and admit it is in a state of "crisis." The Republican governors of Arizona and Texas have declared a disaster and emergency, respectively, as they deal with migrants being released in their states by the tens of thousands despite tourists from outside the United States not being allowed to cross the border at land ports of entry due to the coronavirus pandemic.
