Texas earthquake rattles the region

Nov. 22—Eastern New Mexico was barely rattled by a distant earthquake Nov. 16. The quake's epicenter was roughly 200 miles south of the Clovis/Portales area.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.4 magnitude earthquake centered near Mentone, Tx.

KFOX14-TV in El Paso, Texas, reported that a University of Texas at El Paso professor said it was the area's largest earthquake on record.

The El Paso Times reported the quake was at a depth of six miles, 23 miles west-southwest of Mentone, also according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest recorded earthquake in Texas was in 1931, a 6.0 magnitude quake center near Valentine, Texas.

In New Mexico, the largest on record was in the Socorro area, in 1906, which is said to have been felt in both Arizona to the west and Texas to the east.
