Texas family of 5 sentenced in Capitol riot; parents get 14 days in jail, children probation

WASHINGTON – Five members of a Texas family were sentenced Wednesday for their roles in the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, as part of a family trip to Washington paid for in part with a government stimulus check.

U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell sentenced the parents, Dawn and Thomas Munn, each to 14 days in jail, 90 days of home confinement and 36 months of probation for demonstrating in the Capitol.

Howell sentenced the children – Joshua, 25; Kayli 20; and Kristi Munn, 30 – each to 36 months of probation for demonstrating in the Capitol.

Each member of the family from Borger, Texas, was ordered to pay $500 restitution for their share of the $2.7 million damage to the Capitol. Each relative had been arrested in July 2021 and pleaded guilty in April or May.

Dawn Munn, 57, said in a statement to the court that the trip for adults in the family was planned at the last minute and funded in part with a government stimulus check. The family planned to see the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

But the family also entered and left the Capitol during the riot through a broken window in the Senate wing, staying inside nearly an hour. They saw pushing and shoving among rioters. They heard concussion grenades go off. They were exposed to tear gas on the grounds and inside the building.

“We went in and stormed capital!” Dawn Munn posted Jan. 6 on Facebook. “We stormed in…went in and out through a broken window!!” Kelsi Munn posted on Facebook. “Who broke a window?????... That’s way cool tho.”

In her statement before sentencing, Dawn Munn said she accepts that President Joe Biden is president. But she has lingering questions about the accuracy of the 2020 vote, the concerns that propelled the family to Washington.

“I do have a lot of remorse, for going into the building through the window, and more so overall, about going into the building at all,” Dawn Munn said. “I should have known that something was wrong.”
