Texas football names Ohio State transfer Quinn Ewers starting quarterback

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian indicated Thursday he was close to naming a starting quarterback. No reason to wait around. On Friday, the team announced Quinn Ewers, the transfer from Ohio State, will be the Longhorns starter on Sept. 3.

Sarkisian was not made available to reporters Friday to discuss his decision. The announcement came as a total shock after a post-practice interview session. Most assumed the decision would come next week — after Saturday’s second closed scrimmage of August.

But now, Texas is Ewers’ team. Sarkisian confirmed Thursday that whoever wins the starting job will immediately start taking practice repetitions with the first-team offense and the backup, sophomore Hudson Card, will now be with the second team.

“I definitely don’t think it matters,” tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders said Friday before the announcement was made public. “I feel like whoever gets a starting job is definitely going to be a leader for our team and take us to the long run, for sure.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
