Texas Football: Recapping the first week of fall camp

Texas football is wrapping up the first week of their annual preseason fall camp. From early reports, it appears the camp is going as well as Steve Sarkisian and company envisioned.

Earlier this week we mentioned that Kelvin Banks is off to a strong start. Rave reviews keep pouring in for the mammoth-sized freshman offensive linemen.

Bobby Burton, Eric Nahlin and Justin Wells of Inside Texas published a great recap of what they have seen through the first couple practices.

Burton tempered expectations with a thought I am sure is common among the Longhorns’ fanbase. While the Texas roster has a number of great players, particularly at running back and wide receiver, Burton feels that they do not have overwhelming depth.

On a more positive note, the trio discussed the talent advantage Texas could have over Big 12 teams. Justin Wells commended Isaiah Neyor, calling him, “a true NFL prospect.” Burton echoed Wells’ praise of Neyor.

Here are a few takeaways from the camp’s first week.

Every freshman offensive linemen has been mentioned positively

There is no doubt in my mind that the freshman offensive line class will contribute this season. Malik Agbo was a focus of the On Texas Football podcast. Texas appears to have made a significant coup to get the big human from Washington. Elsewhere, Neto Umeozulu garnered positive remarks for his performance. Umeozulu and Cam Williams were strong pass blockers at the high school level. Steve Sarkisian heaped effusive praise on Connor Robertson. We’ve already talked at length about Kelvin Banks, Cole Hutson and Devon Campbell, whose strong play is almost an expectation at this point. The team should have the necessary depth to combat injury, with plenty of skilled contributors.

Quinn Ewers is perhaps the most natural Texas passer we have seen

Simply watching Quinn Ewers throw routes to receivers in practice is entertaining to watch. The throwing motion is fluid and effortless. Texas is fortunate the redshirt freshman phenom is part of their 2022 football team.

The transfer linebacker was mentioned in the above podcast by the trio from Inside Texas. He impressed at James Madison, and will now have opportunity to showcase his ability at a higher level of play.

Heading into the 2021 season, we were not sure if Texas would have enough consistent receivers. This year, Steve Sarkisian will have a difficult time getting every reliable receiver the football. The depth at running back and wide receiver is at a championship level. Neyor should be one of the players that leads the charge.

Tarique Milton is emerging as a big time player

Tarique Milton is having a strong camp. That’s big news after some questioned whether or not he would recover from injury. No doubt the veteran player has a strong football mind after being developed by Matt Campbell. If he is anything like the player he was at Iowa State, Texas made a great receiver addition this offseason.

It will take time to grow

Texas has an abundance of talent. However, as Burton noted, much of that talent is young and not yet overwhelming. Texas has a chance to have a good season, but may need patience early in the year.
