Texas GOP Approves Resolution Declaring Biden’s Election Illegitimate

The Texas Republican Party approved a resolution contending that President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election was illegitimate, at the Texas Republican Convention in Houston this weekend.
The Texas GOP platform was posted online on Sunday, at the conclusion of the convention. Included were resolutions declaring the 2020 elections illegitimate, and condemning Senator John Cornyn (R., Texas) over his role in recent bipartisan negotiations on gun legislation.
“We believe that the 2020 election violated Article 1 and 2 of the US Constitution, that various secretaries of state illegally circumvented their state legislatures in conducting their elections in multiple ways,” the first resolution states. “We reject the certified results of the 2020 Presidential election, and we hold that acting President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was not legitimately elected by the people of the United States.”
Texas GOP communications director James Wesolek said the elections and gun control resolutions were approved by voice vote, in comments to the New York Times.
The resolution claims that “substantial election fraud in key metropolitan areas” invalidated the result.
“We strongly urge all Republicans to work to ensure election integrity and to show up to vote in November of 2022, bring your friends and family, volunteer for your local Republicans and overwhelm any possible fraud,” the resolution states.
A separate plank of the party platform, posted online on Sunday, declares homosexuality to be “abnormal.”
“Homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice,” the platform states. “No one should be granted special legal status based on 804 their LGBTQ+ identification.” The platform also opposes “all efforts to validate transgender identity,” and proposes a ban on all gender transition procedures for people under age 21.
At the convention itself, Cornyn was booed over gun control legislation while giving a speech. Cornyn and Senator Chris Murphy (D., Conn.) have led negotiations over a new potential federal gun law that would include funding to help states implement “red flag” laws and additional funds for mental-health programs.
Meanwhile, Representative Dan Crenshaw (R., Texas) was heckled by right-wing activists at the convention who called him “Eyepatch McCain.”
